2025 North American Car of the Year: Honda Civic Hybrid
2025 North American Car of the Year: Honda Civic Hybrid The new Honda Civic Hybrid, the electrified iteration of America's beloved compact car, has clinched the prestigious 2025 North American Car of the Year title. This achievement represents a record-setting fourth triumph for the Honda Civic, earning it more NACOY honours than any other nameplate in the award's more than 30-year history. The victory also marks the second accolade for the 11th-generation Civic and the seventh time a Honda vehicle has been honoured with the North American Car or Truck of the Year title. The Honda Civic claimed this award in 2006, 2016, 2022, and 2025, while the Honda Ridgeline won in 2006 and 2017, and the Honda Accord in 2018. "We are honoured to have leading automotive journalists select the Honda Civic hybrid as the North American Car of the Year," said Jessika Laudermilk, assistant vice president of Honda Auto Sales. "Our fun-to-drive hybrid-electric models are a key part of our Honda electrification strategy, and sales of the new Civic hybrid will ultimately represent about 40% of Civic sales." The North American Car, Utility, and Truck of the Year awards honour remarkable accomplishments in innovation, design, safety features, performance, technology, driver satisfaction, and value. Since their inception in 1994, these prestigious awards have been decided by a panel of 50 professional automotive journalists from the United States and Canada, representing independent magazines, television, radio, newspapers, and industry websites. 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid Leading the charge in the refreshed 2025 Honda Civic lineup, the new Civic Hybrid, now offered for the first time as both a sedan and a hatchback, combines the exhilarating drive of the Civic with Honda's renowned two-motor hybrid-electric system. With a total of 200 horsepower and an impressive 232 lb.-ft. of torque, the new Civic Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid are the most powerful non-Type R Civics ever. To further elevate the renowned fun-to-drive essence and top-tier ride comfort of the Civic, the ride and handling dynamics have been meticulously refined with unique spring and damper adjustments, complemented by a specially designed tire for the Civic Hybrid. Hybrid-electric models also offer the pinnacle of cabin quietness and ride comfort within the Civic range, incorporating an extensive noise reduction package that includes Active Noise Control on all hybrids and wheel resonators on the Sport Touring. Civic proudly holds the distinction of being Honda's longest-running automotive nameplate and is consistently ranked among the top three best-selling passenger cars in America over the past 52 years. Since its debut in 1973, Honda has sold over 15 million Civics in North America, with the 11th-generation Civic reaching remarkable success. As the gateway to the Honda brand, it remains America's most popular vehicle, attracting not only Gen Z buyers but also first-time new car buyers and multicultural customers.
A Quarter Century of Hybrid-Electric Hondas In North America
25 Years Of Hybrid-Electric: Honda’s Legacy Honda is celebrating 25 years of hybrid-electric sales in North America, a journey that began with the original Honda Insight, the first Honda hybrid-electric vehicle offered in Canada. This legacy endures today, with hybrid-electric vehicles playing a pivotal role in the company’s electrification strategy. “Honda has been making hybrid-electric history in Canada for 25 years, it began with the Insight and our electrification journey continues with our core hybrid models, the Civic, CR-V and Accord,” said Emile Korkor, Assistant Vice President, Honda Canada. “Our increasingly popular hybrid models are a strategic part of our long-term electrification strategy, toward our ultimate global goal of carbon neutrality for all our products and corporate activities by 2050.” In Canada, over 30% of Honda brand sales now consist of hybrid-electric vehicles, with the Civic, Accord, and CR-V each showcasing the renowned two-motor hybrid-electric system. THE INSIGHT: The First Electric-Hybrid Honda Constructed alongside the NSX and S2000 sports cars at Honda’s Takanezawa Plant in Japan, the acclaimed, first-generation Honda Insight continues to be the most fuel-efficient mass-production vehicle Honda has ever offered in Canada, featuring fuel economy ratings of 3.8 L/100km in the city and 3.4 L/100km on the highway*. Honda engineers crafted a range of innovative technologies, featuring the all-new Integrated Motor Assist (IMA™) hybrid powertrain. This suite also includes the world’s smallest, lightest, and most efficient 1.0-litre gasoline automobile engine, a refined aerodynamic design, and a lightweight aluminum body and structure. Insight's state-of-the-art aerodynamics and the use of aluminum for the two-seater's exterior and frame were crucial in attaining its remarkable fuel efficiency. This vast expertise, along with many of the same technologies, was utilized in the Insight's design to create a novel lightweight aluminum structure that provided high body rigidity and advanced safety features at a lower cost. BUILT IN ONTARIO: Civic Sedan Hybrid Current Honda hybrid-electric models are produced in both Canada and the U.S. The Honda CR-V Hybrid is put together at three locations: Honda of Canada Mfg. in Ontario, the East Liberty Auto Plant in Ohio, and the Indiana Auto Plant. The Accord Hybrid is manufactured at the Marysville Auto Plant in Ohio. The Civic Sedan Hybrid is crafted at Honda of Canada Mfg., while the Civic Hatchback Hybrid is assembled at the Indiana Auto Plant. Associates at Honda Power Unit Operations in Ohio are responsible for constructing both the two-motor hybrid-electric power unit at the Ohio Transmission Plant and the 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine at the Anna Engine Plant for the Civic, Accord Hybrid, and CR-V Hybrid models. ELECTRIFYING HONDA: Going Carbon Neutral In alignment with the company's global objective to achieve carbon neutrality across all products and corporate activities by 2050, Honda envisions that battery-electric and fuel-cell electric vehicles will constitute 100% of its vehicle sales by 2040. Hybrid-electric vehicles are integral to Honda's electrification strategy, which focuses on incorporating hybrid-electric powertrains into its main models. In Canada, hybrid-electric versions, equipped with the renowned fourth-generation Honda two-motor hybrid-electric powertrain, now represent over 50% of Accord and CR-V sales. The forthcoming 2025 Civic Hybrid models are expected to eventually constitute about 60% of Civic sales. Cumulative sales of Honda's electrified vehicles in North America have exceeded the one million mark. This year, Honda introduced the Honda Prologue, marking the brand's entry into the all-electric SUV market. By late 2025, Honda will begin producing its own electric vehicles, using the newly developed Honda e:Architecture platform, at the Honda EV Hub. Alliston Honda Plant To Specialise In Electric Vehicles Honda Canada has announced its intention to establish a comprehensive EV value chain in Canada, with an estimated investment of $15 billion Canadian. This initiative aims to enhance Honda's EV supply infrastructure and capabilities in anticipation of a surge in EV demand in North America. Honda is currently in the initial stages of assessing the necessary steps to construct an innovative and environmentally conscious Honda EV manufacturing facility, along with a dedicated Honda EV battery plant in Alliston, Ontario. Honda plans to commence electric vehicle production in 2028. The EV plant is projected to produce 240,000 EVs annually once it is fully operational. Honda aims not only to maintain the current employment level of 4,200 associates at its two existing manufacturing facilities in Ontario but also to recruit at least 1,000 new associates for the EV and EV battery manufacturing facilities. President and CEO of Honda Canada Jean Marc Leclerc says “Honda of Canada Manufacturing is one of the premier automotive manufacturing facilities in the world and for nearly forty years, our work has been guided by determination, innovation, and a relentless drive to evolve. Today's announcement is a historic investment by a manufacturer in the Canadian auto industry. It proudly honours the highly skilled associates who have earned a global reputation for manufacturing excellence and represents Honda’s recognition of the long-term attractiveness of the Canadian electric vehicle manufacturing ecosystem.” The establishment of the new facilities will also generate numerous additional jobs across all sites, particularly in the construction sector. In order to bolster this initiative, Honda is working closely with the Canadian and Ontario governments to foster advancements in low-emissions manufacturing. This collaboration involves leveraging performance-based programs provided by the federal government's recently introduced Investment Tax Credits, as well as provincial incentives, both direct and indirect. Honda’s EV Strategy For North America In pursuit of achieving carbon neutrality for all its products and corporate activities by 2050, Honda has established an objective for BEVs and FCEVs to account for 100% of vehicle sales by 2040. To reach this target, Honda will persist in providing appealing products during this electrified era worldwide, with a focus on its primary market in North America. To achieve this electrification goal in North America, Honda took the initial step by designating its current automobile production facilities in Ohio, USA, as its EV Hub. This includes the revamping of the current plants, a $700 million investment, and the establishment of a joint venture EV battery plant with LG Energy Solution, involving an anticipated investment of $4.4 billion. The Ohio EV hub will act as the cornerstone for upcoming EV and EV battery manufacturing, exchanging knowledge and skills with other Honda facilities in North America. EV production at the Marysville Auto Plant is anticipated to commence in late 2025. As the next phase of this initiative, Honda aims to set up a complete EV value chain in Canada, covering all stages of EV manufacturing, from sourcing raw materials, especially for batteries, to assembling complete EVs. Furthermore, by considering secondary use and battery recycling, Honda aims to achieve low-carbon value creation across the entire battery life cycle. This approach will not only help Honda build a strong and profitable business but also support the transition to a carbon-neutral society.
